Songs for the Election Season

It's so tiresome to watch the conventions and hear the light rock boomer music they have playing anytime they want to rile up the bourgeois troops to get hip to their nominee.

There are so, so many better songs for this election season, that will not be heard on any official channels. Here is a list of some contemporary political/election-themed songs (with sample lyrics) that I would like to see on the soundtrack to this election:

Radiohead, "Electioneering":I will stop, I will stop at nothing. / Say the right things when electioneering / I trust I can rely on your vote.

Rufus Wainwright, "Going to a Town": I'm going to a town that has already been burnt down / I'm going to a place that has already been disgraced / I'm gonna see some folks who have already been let down / I'm so tired of America.

Mates of State, "Get Better":Forget all your politics for a while / Let the color schemes arrive / ... Everything's gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better.

Over the Rhine, "If a Song Could Be President": They would show us where our country went wrong / Strum their guitars on the White House lawn / John Prine would run the FBI / All the criminals would laugh and cry / If a song could be president.

Coldplay, "Viva la Vida":Revolutionaries wait / For my head on a silver plate / Just a puppet on a lonely string /Oh who would ever want to be king?

The National, "Mr. November":I'm the new blue blood, I'm the great white hope / I'm the new blue blood / I won't f*** us over, I'm Mr. November.

Derek Webb, "A King and a Kingdom":There are two great lies that I've heard: "the day you eat of the fruit of that tree, you will not surely die" / And that Jesus Christ was a white, middle-class republican / And if you wanna be saved you have to learn to be like Him.

Arcade Fire, "Windowsill":I don't want to fight in a holy war / I don't want the salesmen knocking at my door / I don't want to live in America no more.

Gorillaz, "Dirty Harry": The war is over / So said the speaker / With the flight suit on / Maybe to him I'm just a pawn / So he can advance / Remember how they used dance / All I wanna do is dance.

Ron Sexsmith, "From Now On": Have we been lied to / Best keep our eyes open / From now on / There's no peace of mind / When the war's inside you / It feels like something's broken / Something's gone.
