My latest book is coming in August from Zondervan Reflective: The Wisdom of Sleep: How Rest Reveals God's Truth and Revives Weary Souls.
I’m really excited about this one. Writing it was the most spiritually stimulating, mind-blowing process of all the books I’ve written.
But why a book about sleep? Why now? 10 quick reasons:
God created us to sleep a third of our lives. He didn’t have to create us this way. Why did he? I’m fascinated by this question.
In the dawning AI age, we need lessons in human embodiment and the goodness of limits. Sleep is a great teacher.
Sleep is a seemingly inefficient necessity in an age of optimization. But therein lies its wisdom.
In a culture where biohacking and wellness obsessions mask a debilitating fear of death, sleep is a nightly reminder of mortality.
Waking up from sleep is a daily rehearsal of resurrection. Every morning across creation, the rising sun and revived slumberers echo spiritual truth and eschatological hope.
The gospel is rest. It’s a gracious gift we receive that empowers fruitful living, not a reward we earn because of fruitful living. Kind of like sleep.
Scientific consensus increasingly says sleep is a "miracle" of overnight restoration—that good sleep is the single best habit for our overall health. How interesting that this restoration is something we receive in a death-like, passive posture, not something we achieve for ourselves.
Sleep is a mysterious, multifaceted phenomenon best analyzed through a “two books” reading: The book of Scripture (special revelation) and the book of nature (general revelation). My book reflects deeply on sleep both theologically and scientifically.
Hard work is good, but so is rest. Work and rest get their meaning—and flourish most—as a complementary pair.
We're all tired! The pace of contemporary life is relentless. The weary world is hungry for deep rest. I hope my book points readers to God’s glorious rest.
More on the book soon! But for now, if you’re the sort of person who pre-orders books, you can pre-order The Wisdom of Sleep.
